About Marcus
Mark Pedro, widely recognised as Marcus, hails from the serene community of St Paul on Moa Island, nestled in the Torres Strait. Marcus is from the Wagadagam Tribe, and his totems are: Dugong, Shovel Nose Shark, and Crocodile. As an Indigenous voice, Marcus stands out as a beacon of motivation and inspiration, not just for his community but for all who hear his story.
His journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the indomitable human spirit. Growing up, Marcus faced the brunt of bullying, often being labeled and dismissed with derogatory terms. Despite the challenges and the cloud of negativity, he found solace and strength in sports, which became his refuge during those trying times.
A pivotal moment in Marcus's life was achieving the high rank, as a Black Sash, in Kung-Fu, while working as a labourer, in the Queensland Rails, then becoming a Professional DJ the 80s, to then his tenure with the Queensland Police Service in the 1990s. It was here that he discovered he had dyslexia, a revelation that shed light on his academic struggles. But rather than let this diagnosis define him, Marcus used it as a stepping stone, channeling his experiences into empowerment.
Today, Marcus is not just a motivational speaker; he's a symbol of hope. Through his book "Three Warriors Within" and his talks, he aims to uplift, empower, and challenge students and youths. By sharing his personal narrative, he provides a relatable roadmap for those facing similar challenges, encouraging them to rise above adversity and embrace their true potential.
Marcus's mission is clear: to ensure that every young individual, regardless of their background or challenges, recognizes their worth and harnesses their inner strength. Join him on this journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and inspiration.
Co-Author
The late Nell Arnold, approached Marcus, and asked him, if he would like to be the 3rd Indigenous person, to have a book, that she was writting, a series, called "Out of Australia" Marcus declined Nell's request, and Nell said, you can't stand in front of students, and tell them, when an opportunity comes your way, grab it, with both hands :) So Marcus did. :)) As an Indigenous motivational and inspirational speaker from St Paul, a small community on Moa Island, in the Torres Strait. The book is primarily aimed at motivating, inspiring, empowering, and challenging students and youths to be the best they can be.
Marcus shares his personal story, which many Indigenous students and youth can relate to, coming from a small remote Indigenous community, in Far North Queensland. He was bullied at school and was often told that he wouldn't amount to anything in life. He was considered "dumb," "stupid," a "duffer," and a "loser." The only thing he was good at in school was sports. He didn't realise he had dyslexia until he joined the Queensland Police Service.
.
Despite his struggles, Marcus managed to overcome his challenges and wants to share the skills he learned along his life's journey to help the youth. He provides simple tools that the students can easily read, digest, and apply in their daily lives.
Some of the key takeaways from the book include:

“Marcus presents a journey of his life with so many pivots it really keeps the audience guessing where to next.
He not only engaged the enormous team with his honesty and willingness to share his journey, but with many opportunities to have a laugh.
The importance of education pathways was really highlighted along with the potential for great outcomes when opportunities are developed to support students individually in a way that works for them.
It didn’t hurt to see the boss trying to dance the moves Marcus was trying to teach either, I think I developed my own 3 left feet that day ! Marcus left me with an inspiration to do better, the idea of change and that my journey has so much potential if I am open to the opportunity.”
